One in three college students experience food insecurity, the equivalent of more than 4 million students according to the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study. Swipe Out Hunger works to ensure that any student, regardless of their economic status, can pursue higher education. Starting as a grassroots movement for underserved students at UCLA in 2010, Swipe has become the leading national nonprofit working to end college student hunger. Swipe’s original model is the Swipe Drive, which enables students to donate extra meals to their peers facing food insecurity on campus.
With increasing need arising during the pandemic, Swipe’s services have grown beyond this flagship program into a suite of additional food security initiatives and basic needs programs on campuses. We work with a growing network of 750+ colleges and universities across the country to design and implement a range of anti-hunger programs including on-campus solutions (such as food pantries and SNAP enrollment), policy and advocacy pathways, and community building practices to center student voices and experiences in the national conversation to end college hunger. To date, Swipe Out Hunger has served over 10 million meals to thousands of students across the country.
