The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted children’s lives at an unprecedented scale, and one of the most impacted sectors of their lives were interrupted educations. In 2020, Over 1.6 billion learners had their education interrupted, of which almost half were girls. As of July 2021, 600 million children are still out of school.
COVID-19 isn’t the only issue that interrupts learning. Globally, children have unequal access to education, whether it’s due to crisis, inadequate facilities or an educational style that isn’t tailored to their abilities or lifestyle.
To support children around the world, UNICEF is working in many ways to continue education, including:
• working day in and day out to help vaccinate the world, prioritizing teachers, so schools and communities can re-open;
• working with schools to ensure they’re accommodating for missed learning during the pandemic;
• continuing to offer a variety of opportunities to continue learning and stay engaged during crises (i.e. temporary learning centers and schools in a box);
• and working with governments around the world to even the educational playing field.
