We began more than 40 years ago in Malibu, California as a small group of surfers fighting to preserve what we love. We believe that every individual should have access to safe beaches, clean water, and healthy coasts. Today we are a nationwide network of grassroots activists, working here in the US and globally, to promote beach protection, healthy oceans, and sustainable lifestyle habits.
Surfrider’s grassroots network, empowered by our team of experts, has never been stronger or more inspired to protect our coasts and ocean. In 2024, Surfrider achieved success by securing 59 victories to protect our ocean and coasts, and in 2025 we are nearing our 1,000th victory across local, state, and federal issues. These campaign wins tackled a range of coastal threats – from plastic pollution to offshore drilling to sewage overflows – and are a testament to the power of citizen activism.
Yet, these campaign victories tell only part of the story. Last year alone, more than 50,0000 Surfrider volunteers engaged in hands-on coastal conservation through our chapters and clubs. These individuals are the leaders in their communities and schools who provide a never-ending commitment to defend our coasts. They are the ones who organize chapter events, clean beaches, green campuses, speak at city council meetings and wage the battles against harmful projects. In 2024, our network removed more than 364,000 pounds of trash from beaches and waterways to create healthier beaches; performed 9,500 water quality tests to ensure beaches are safe for swimming, surfing, and playing; and installed over 14,000 native plants as a nature-based solution to restore and reinforce our coastlines.
The core focus areas and campaigns that the Surfrider Foundation uses to protect our oceans, waves and beaches include coastal preservation and climate action, plastic pollution reduction, clean water, beach access, and ocean protection.
