Philippines Earthquake Response

, International Medical Corps

Late in the evening on September 30th, 20205, a powerful 6.9 earthquake shook the central Philippines, causing widespread damage across Cebu and the surrounding provinces. The devastation killed at least 69 people and injured hundreds more. These numbers are expected to increase as search and rescue operations continue in the coming days, with rescue teams working tirelessly to reach survivors trapped beneath the rubble.

Meanwhile, the earthquake triggered destructive landslides, blocking off major roads and further complicating the delivery of essential supplies to remote areas. Additionally, entire communities have been displaced and are facing critical power outages and water shortages. Your support, at any level, is vital to ensuring that families affected by this disaster receive the care and resources they need to recover.

International Medical Corps has extensive experience responding to severe earthquakes and has been working in the Philippines since 2013. Our teams are currently coordinating with national and local partners to provide immediate relief to affected communities. At this early stage, urgent needs include food, medical supplies, hygiene supplies and non-food items such as blankets and mattresses to support those living in temporary displacement sites. As more gaps emerge and needs are assessed, our teams stand ready to provide trauma care, mental health and psychosocial support and essential health services.

*Please note for recurring donations: Once we have determined that the community can continue to respond to the after-effects of this emergency without us, we will scale back our response efforts. At that time, we will redirect your future donations where they are needed most to help us respond to future outbreaks of conflict, disease or disaster.
