About This Cause
Founded in 1948, Direct Relief is a US registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity that serves the medical needs of the at-risk and underserved.
Direct Relief focuses on four key areas globally as it seeks to provide acute and long-term sustainable solutions to address access to healthcare for vulnerable populations, including:
- DISASTER PREPAREDNESS & RESPONSE
- HEALTH EQUITY
- SUSTAINABILITY AT THE INTERSECTION OF CLIMATE AND HEALTH
- ACCESS TO MEDICINE AND HEALTHCARE
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS & RESPONSE:
- Direct Relief’s Emergency Prep and Response efforts around the world are fast, efficient and in direct response to specific requests from local partners
- Direct Relief approaches disaster work on three levels: preparation, response and long-term power resiliency (including its sustainable Power for Health initiative, which provides solar-based energy solutions for community-based healthcare clinics in the US)
HEALTH EQUITY:
- Direct Relief prioritizes communities with limited access to healthcare and people for whom regular access to healthcare is cost-prohibitive
- Through its Fund for Health Equity, Direct Relief provides support for organizations focused on a) diversification of the healthcare provider workforce; b) social determinants of health; and c) innovation and technology to improve patient care
- The Fund for Health Equity prioritizes communities with significant African American, Hispanic and Native American populations
SUSTAINABILITY AT THE INTERSECTION OF CLIMATE AND HEALTH:
- A key evolution of Direct Relief’s aid is working downstream to mitigate the damage from increasingly severe climate-based disasters, and to ensure delivery of humanitarian medical aid doesn’t end with its supply chain
- This work includes bolstering three key capacity-building areas including: energy resiliency; medical oxygen supply and cold-chain
- Direct Relief’s Power for Health is one such initiative - providing sustainable solar- based solutions for community clinics in the US (and similar projects internationally)
ACCESS TO MEDICINE AND HEALTHCARE:
- Direct Relief is the largest medical relief organization and largest charitable provider of medicines globally
- Direct Relief partners with a worldwide network of more than 5,500 safety net clinics in the US and public hospitals and clinics in lower income communities and developing nations - to equip health professionals to meet the challenges of diagnosing and treating individuals with limited access to care
