Natural Disasters in the Philippines

by International Medical Corps

Over the past several months, the Philippines has endured a series of natural disasters—including tropical storm Wipha in July, a devastating 6.9-magnitude earthquake in September and two typhoons that wreaked havoc on Luzon in early November. The extreme events have caused widespread destruction, damaging infrastructure and triggering landslides and flooding that have cut off access to essential health services. These disasters have killed hundreds of people and displaced hundreds of thousands from their homes. As a result, evacuation centers are under immense strain, rapidly becoming overcrowded and heightening the risk of infectious disease outbreaks, including malaria and cholera.

In response to the devastation, International Medical Corps immediately sprang into action. Our teams are coordinating with national and local partners to bring immediate relief—including medical supplies, hygiene kits and non-food items—to affected communities.

International Medical Corps has extensive experience responding to natural disasters, including storms and earthquakes. Our teams have been working in the Philippines since 2013. Over the years, we have responded to some of the deadliest weather disasters to strike the region, including Typhoon Haiyan, Typhoon Hagupit, Typhoon Mangkhu, and Typhoon Gaemi.

Your support can help bring urgently needed medical care and supplies to the people of the Philippines affected by these devastating natural disasters as they rebuild and recover.

*Please note for recurring donations: Once we have determined that the community can continue to respond to the after-effects of this emergency without us, we will scale back our response efforts. At that time, we will redirect your future donations where they are needed most to help us respond to future outbreaks of conflict, disease or disaster.
